From Proto-Polynesian *maqitaki; cognate with Tuamotuan maitaki, Rarotongan meitaki, Rapa maitaki, Austral maitaʻi, North Marquesan meitaʻi, South Marquesan meitaʻi, Hawaiian maikaʻi, Maori maitai.[1]
