EtymologyEdit

From *mararja, from Byzantine Greek *μαράθριον(*maráthrion), diminutive of Ancient Greek μάραθρον(márathron), μάραθον(márathon). Alternatively, from a Vulgar Latin derivative of the same Ancient Greek word: compare Latin marathrum. Related to Romanian mărar and perhaps to Old Church Slavonic молотрь(molotrĭ, fennel).
