From Proto-Oceanic *mate-an (compare Mota matea) or *mate-aŋa (compare Niuean mateaga), from *mate (to die) + *-an, *-aŋa (nominalizing suffix). Equivalent to mate (to die) + -anga (nominalizing suffix).
