From Proto-Celtic *mendo- (“kid, suckling”), which could ultimately be from the same root as maoin (“mild, tender”),[1] though Stokes prefers a comparison to Ancient Greek μαζός (mazós, “breast”), Old High German manzon, Albanian mεnt (“suck”).
