Etymology

edit

Back-formation from mehaanika.

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /meˈhɑˑnik/, [meˈɦɑˑnʲikˑ]
  • Rhymes: -ɑˑnik
  • Hyphenation: me‧haa‧nik

Noun

edit

mehaanik (genitive mehaaniku, partitive mehaanikut)

  1. mechanic, engineer (a skilled worker who builds, maintains and repairs machinery and equipment)

Usage notes

edit

The exceptional spelling of the words mehaanika, mehaanik, mehaaniline with one h instead of two, as Estonians often (incorrectly) spell them, follows Elmar Muuk's suggestion in the 1920s to treat them as loan words, not foreign words. Since 1953, variants with one or two h's have been allowed, since 2006, variants with one h have been preferred.
