Cognate with Penobscot mə̀kihkan (fishhook), Malecite-Passamaquoddy mkihkon (fishhook)/pkihkon. Possibly cognate with Massachusett uhquân (hook), Narragansett hoquaùn.

Possibly from Proto-Algonquian *mekeçkani.[1]
