Etymology

edit

Inherited from Old Swedish miþsumar. Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk midtsumar and Norwegian Bokmål midtsommer, but has a slightly different sense.

Pronunciation

edit

Noun

edit

midsommar c

  1. midsummer (holiday)

Usage notes

edit
  • Midsommar can either be pronounced a short first vowel and no /d/, or with (usually) a long first vowel and an audible /d/. The first pronunciation is older and is an example of complete regressive assimilation, where clusters such as -ds- and -ts- were assimilated to -ss-, which also found in the pronunciation of words like ledsen, låtsas, matsäck, skjutsa, and many others. The second pronunciation is newer and have a reintroduced /d/ due to spelling pronunciation. Both are considered standard and correct.
