From Arabic مِسْكِين(miskīn, poor, to be pitied), in turn from Classical Syriac ܡܶܤܟܸܐܢܳܐ / ܡܶܤܟܸܢܳܐ / ܡܶܤܟܸܝܢܳܐ(meskēnā, miserable, wretched), from Akkadian 𒈦𒆕 (muškēnu, beggar, needy, indigent). Compare Italian meschino.
