Etymology

edit

From Arabic مَناخِير (manāḵīr), plural of مِنْخار (minḵār, nostril), whence Maltese minħar. Arabic dialects have widely lost the word أَنْف (ʔanf, nose) and replaced it with this word (either the plural as in Maltese, or the singular).
