From Proto-Philippine *limuʀmuʀ (gargle), ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *muʀmuʀ. Compare Hiligaynon limug, Cebuano limugmog, Waray-Waray limugmog, Bikol Central limugmug, Kapampangan mulmul, and Ilocano mulumog.
