Icelandic edit

Etymology edit

Formed from the numeral níu, perhaps by directly reanalizing the -u as the weak feminine oblique suffix in environments where níu is the object in a sentence. Compare tía and átta, also fimma, sexa, sjöa.

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

nía f (genitive singular níu, nominative plural níur)

  1. nine (playing card, bus, etc., numbered 9)
