     Có 4 nguyên chất cần hẳn cho vật sống, là thán chất, dưỡng khí, khinh khí và đạm khí. Lại thường có ít nhiều nguyên chất khác giúp cho động vật khoẻ mạnh làm việc nọ sinh ích kia nữa, như phấn thạch, sắt, bộc diêm (lỗ dưỡng), lục khí, lân tinh, lưu hoàng (sinh).
