Old French orchel, orseil (modern French orseille), of uncertain origin.

- Any of several lichens, especially those of the genera Roccella and Lecanora.
- The purple dye, orcein, extracted from them (especially Lecanora tartarea) and often used as substitute for Tyrian purple.
