From për- (for) +‎ dhunë (force, violence); dhunë from Proto-Albanian *(e)δunā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁(e)dun-eh₂ (pain, smart)[1] or alternatively from Proto-Albanian *edunti or *adunti.[2]
