Etymology

Composed of púður (powder) +‎ sykur (sugar). Calque of Danish puddersukker (which today refers to brown sugar, but originally referred to finely ground (therefore, presumably, called “powdered”) raw sugar), itself from German Puderzucker.

False friend of English powdered sugar and German Puderzucker, which are instead called flórsykur in Icelandic.
