From Late Latin pergaminum, from Latin pergamena, from Ancient Greek περγαμηνή (pergamēnḗ), from Πέργαμον (Pérgamon), because Pergamenes invented a new substance for writing codices. Cognate with English parchment, Danish pergament, Dutch perkament, French parchemin, German Pergament, Greek περγαμηνή (pergaminí), Italian pergamena, Norwegian pergament, Romanian pergament, Russian пергамент (pergament), Spanish pergamino and Swedish pergament.
