editCoined by French chemists Jean-Baptiste Dumas, Faustino Malaguti and Félix Leblanc in 1847 in the combination acide propionique, this being the first compound in the series of fatty acids, as a compound of either Ancient Greek πρῶ(τον) (prô(ton), “first”) or προ- (pro-, “position in front”) + πίων (píōn, “fat”).
