Etymology edit

Coined by French chemists Jean-Baptiste Dumas, Faustino Malaguti and Félix Leblanc in 1847 in the combination acide propionique, this being the first compound in the series of fatty acids, as a compound of either Ancient Greek πρῶ(τον) (prô(ton), first) or προ- (pro-, position in front) + πίων (píōn, fat).
