    • 1896, James Dwight Dana, Manual of Geology: Treating of the Principles of the Science with Special Reference to American Geological History:
      The body of Man has retrograded also in being merosthenic in limbs, instead of prosthenic, the hinder limbs being the stronger as well as longer, and the fore limbs comparatively weak.
