editFrom Ancient Greek κεράσιον (kerásion, “cherry”), from κερασός (kerasós, “bird cherry”).[1] Alternatively possibly partly through a Vulgar Latin and Late Latin intermediate ceresia < ceresium, from the same Greek root. Compare Romanian cireașă, Aromanian cireashi.
