From Latin quārtus (“fourth”) + -di (“day”), taken from the ordinary weekday names: lundi (“Monday”), mardi (“Tuesday”), mercredi (“Wednesday”), jeudi (“Thursday”), vendredi (“Friday”), samedi (“Saturday”).
