editEtymology
editPossibly from the Turkish karakaçan, from kara (“black”) + kaçan (“fugitive”), referring to those who dressed in black and fled to the mountains during the Ottoman occupation of Greece. Another theory derives it from the village of Saraketsi. See Sarakatsani; see also in Wikipedia.
