From Middle Irish sub, from Old Irish suib, from Proto-Celtic *subi (strawberry), of unknown, likely pre-Celtic substrate origin. Cognate with Irish (red berry), Manx soo (berry), Welsh syfi and Cornish sevi (strawberries).
