From Proto-West Germanic *samftī, from Proto-Germanic *samftija (adjective) (compare Proto-Germanic *sōmiz (“agreeable, fitting”)), from Proto-Indo-European *sóm-tu-, possibly from *sem- (“one, whole”).[1][2]
