From Proto-Eastern Algonquian *sakēhīkan, from unknown element *sakēh-, perhaps meaning to climb, + *-īkan (inanimate noun suffix), compare Abenaki lôdawôgan (ladder), from lôdawa (to climb). Cognate with Unami sahkehikàn (ladder, stairs), Penobscot skówhikan (fish ladder).
