From Middle Dutch scelve, scelf, from Old Dutch *skelfa, *skelf, from Proto-West Germanic *skelfu, *skelf, from Proto-Germanic *skelfō (crag, cliff, ledge). Cognate with German Low German Schelf (haystack), West Frisian skelf, English shelf.
