schtroumpf

FrenchEdit

EtymologyEdit

Coined by Peyo, probably from German Strumpf (stocking, sock), which is not semantically related, but peculiar and “funny sounding” to the French ear because of the unfamiliar combinations of consonants. See also smurf.
