From Ottoman Turkish سرپندی (serpindi, “any thing slightly sprinkled or scattered about, a slight rain, sleet or snow, the unexpected ill effects of a remote cause”),[1] alternatively سرپنتی (serpinti), from Ottoman Turkish سرپنمك (serpinmek, “to sprinkle over one's self, to sprinkle slightly”), from Ottoman Turkish سرپمك (serpmek, “to sprinkle slightly, to scatter, (of rain) to fall in a sprinkle”), from Proto-Turkic *sep- (“to scatter, to sprinkle”),[2][3] morphologically serp- + -in + -ti.
