Etymology

edit

Unknown. One theory suggests a derivation from Latin faenerārius, meaning either "hay seller" – from faenum (hay) – or "usurer" – from fenerō, faenerō (to lend on interest) – with an initial s- added in Romanian, but this is improbable. Another connects it to the Romanian word sfârlă, though this too is uncertain. One possibility may be a link to the Slavic term *svarati (to delude, deceive, seduce), as it is often used to mean a salesman without scruples or morals.[1]
