sköta
Swedish edit
Etymology edit
From Old Norse skeyta (“to join, take care of”)
Pronunciation edit
Audio (file)
Verb edit
sköta (present sköter, preterite skötte, supine skött, imperative sköt)
- (sometimes followed by om) to manage to, to maintain, to care for, to nurse
- Nisse sköter finanserna
- Nisse manages the finances
- Patienten sköts av syster Bengt
- The patient is cared for by sister Bengt
- (reflexive) to behave
- han kunde inte sköta sig
- he could not behave
- (literally, “he could not take care of himself”)
Usage notes edit
Bit more of a "care for" nuance when of people and followed by om. "Jag ska sköta om dig" (I will care for you) sounds better than "Jag ska sköta dig" (I will take care of/manage you, ish).
