From Proto-Germanic *smukô (smoke, nebulous air), from Proto-Indo-European *smug- (to smoke; a smoke). Cognate with German Schmauch (dense smoke), Old Irish múch (smoke), Ancient Greek σμύχω (smúkhō, burn with smoldering flame) and Old Armenian մուխ (mux, smoke).
