Etymology

edit

From Old Danish sprethæ, from Middle Low German sprēden, spreiden, from Proto-Germanic *spraidijaną (to spread). Cognate with English spread and German spreiten. Due to the absence of this word in Old Icelandic, the Danish word as well as Norwegian Bokmål spre, Norwegian Nynorsk spreie and Swedish sprida are probably borrowed from Low German.
