From syr, short for Syriac, + abbreviation of Classical Syriac ܦܫܝܛܬܐ (pəšīṭtā), shortened from ܡܦܩܬܐ ܦܫܝܛܬܐ (mappaqtā pəšīṭtā, “simple version”).
