From older tylp, tylpel, from archaic German Tülpel (equivalent to present-day German Tölpel), from Middle Low German dorper. Doublet of torpare. Regarding the shift in sense from "villager" to "oaf", compare with the origin of the otherwise unrelated French vilain.
