From Old High German durfan, from Proto-Germanic *þurbaną (to need; must), from Proto-Indo-European *tetórpe (to be satisfied). Compare German dürfen, Low German dörven, English tharf, Icelandic þurfa, Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌰𐌽 (þaurban).
