ticket collector (plural ticket collectors)

  1. A person who checks that passengers on a train etc have a valid ticket, and marks or clips it so that it cannot be used again.
    • 1963 December, “News and Comment: The West Coast main line today”, in Modern Railways, page 368:
      This left Crewe on time, but was stopped at Stafford, after which we discovered we were being diverted from the Trent Valley main line to the Birmingham line. The ticket collector then appeared and informed passengers that there had been a derailment at Shilton and that we might expect to be 45min late on arrival.
