Etymology

edit

From Arabic تَاج (tāj, crown, diadem). Semantically from a ceremonial headpiece worn on one's wedding day. Possibly the bride's chaplet (the symbol of her virginity), but more probably the wedding crowns of the Byzantine tradition, by which Malta was influenced in the Middle Ages.
