From Proto-Brythonic *trex (“stronger”) (compare Cornish trygh (“victorious”), Middle Welsh trech (“stronger”), from Proto-Celtic *trexsos, comparative of Proto-Celtic *trexsnos (“strong”) (compare Old Irish trén (“strong”), comparative tressa, tressiu; from Proto-Indo-European *(s)treg- (“to be stiff, rigid, strong”) (Old Norse þróttr (“strength”)).
