Cognate with Old Saxon tredan (Low German treden), Old Frisian treda, Old Dutch tredan (Dutch treden), Old High German tretan (German treten); see also Old Norse troða, Gothic 𐍄𐍂𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 ‎(trudan), both from a weak-grade of the Germanic root.
