From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-dzam (bridge). Cognate with Tibetan ཟམ་པ (zam pa, bridge), Nuosu (zzi, bridge), Nusu gu⁵⁵ dza³³ (bridge), Lisu ꓖꓳꓽ ꓙꓱꓻ (dʒø, bridge, ladder), Hani zol (bridge, ladder), Naxi zzoq (bridge), Tangut 𗋻 (*dzow¹, bridge), Japhug ndzom (bridge), Horpa dzo (bridge), Northern Pumi dzã³⁵ (bridge) and Drung dzɑ̆m⁵⁵ (bridge). Compare Lhao Vo zae, Zaiwa zam, Lashi zam,, Longchuan Achang tɕam⁵⁵ and Luxi Achang tsam³¹.
