Etymology 1

Inherited from Sanskrit वाल (vāla). Although both Pali and documented Sanskrit have a by-form with initial b- (bāla and बाल (bāla)), the by-forms need not be a common inheritance.

Etymology 2

edit

Apparently inherited from Sanskrit व्याल (vyāla). However, both these forms look like Prakritisations of vāḷa (a type of savage animal) and its apparent source Sanskrit व्याड (vyāḍa), so relationships may be more complex.
