From the Old French volonte, voulonté, volunté, voulunté, volenté, from Latin voluntās (will, desire, disposition toward).[1] Equivalent to voulant +‎ -té. Cognate with Occitan volontat, Spanish voluntad, Portuguese vontade, Italian volontà.[2]
