vuosipäivä
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
vuosi (“year”) + päivä (“day”)
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
vuosipäivä
- anniversary (day celebrated annually to commemorate some important event)
- Tänään on talvisodan päättymisen vuosipäivä.
- Today is the anniversary of the end of the Winter War.
Usage notes edit
There are two ways to indicate the ordinal number of the anniversary. An ordinal number may be put in front of the word vuosipäivä, just as in English, or a cardinal number may be combined with the noun vuotispäivä. If the cardinal number ends with kymmenen (“ten”) or kymmentä, it is replaced with the stem kymmen:
- sadas vuosipäivä = satavuotispäivä (“hundredth anniversary”)
- kymmenes vuosipäivä = kymmenvuotispäivä (“tenth anniversary”)
