Dutch edit

Numenius arquata in Nederlandsche vogelen, 1770-1829

Etymology edit

Perhaps ultimately from a Proto-Germanic *hwelpaną (to cry, yelp), whence *hwelpaz (whelp) may also derive. Alternatively, from the same root as *hwelbaną (to curve) (Dutch welven), referring to the curved beak characteristic of curlews. Cognates include Saterland Frisian Wilp, West Frisian wylp, Old English hwilpe, Scots whaup and perhaps English yarwhelp (godwit). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
