The sense 'lock' is inherited from Proto-Slavic *zamъkъ. The sense 'manor house' is a semantic loan from Middle High German sloz (“lock, keep”) (cf. German Schloss),[1] itself a semantic loan of Latin clūsa (“lock, fort, fortification”).
