From Slovak čo bol ("what was" or "who was"), a very frequent collocation of words significantly different from their Czech equivalents (Czech co byl). Possibly associated with a catchphrase čo bolo, to bolo, terazky som majorom ("what's past is past, I am a major now") used by the character of Slovak Major Haluška in Miroslav Švandrlík's satirical novel Černí baroni.
