Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *métsos, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰyos (“between”). Cognate with Latin medius, Sanskrit मध्य (madhya), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬌𐬁𐬥𐬀 (maⁱδiiāna), Old Armenian մէջ (mēǰ), etc.
