Inherited from Old Ruthenian осмъдесѧтъ (osmdesjat). Compounded from во́сем (vósjem) +‎ дзе́сяць (dzjésjacʹ), literally eight tens. Compare Old Church Slavonic осмь дєсѧтъ (osmĭ desętŭ). Other cognates include Ukrainian вісімдеся́т (visimdesját) and Russian во́семьдесят (vósemʹdesjat).
