Compounded from тры (try) +‎ на (na) +‎ дзе́сяць (dzjésjacʹ), literally three on ten. Compare Old Church Slavonic трьѥ на дєсѧтє (trĭje na desęte). Other cognates include Ukrainian трина́дцять (trynádcjatʹ) and Russian трина́дцать (trinádcatʹ).
