For some placenames demonyms sound a bit awkward. There is no feminine form for "ньюйоркец", "жи́тельница Нью-Йо́рка" should be used instead and the term itself is often replaced with "жи́тель Нью-Йо́рка" (i.e. citizen/dweller of New York).
