Etymology 1 edit

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃ew-e/o-, from *h₃ew- (to put on (shoes, clothes)), +‎ -ան- (-an-). The initial հ- (h-), found in the later form հագանիմ (haganim) and dialectal հագնել (hagnel), may have an etymological value. Cognates include Latin ex-uō (undress, take off), ind-uō (put on, clothe), Avestan 𐬀𐬊𐬚𐬭𐬀 (aoθra, shoe), Lithuanian aũti (to take off shoes), Russian обу́ть (obútʹ). See also առագաստ (aṙagast), օդ (ōd), օթոց (ōtʻocʻ).
